Banjul, The Gambia

The Gambia is one of Africa's smallest country with a population of almost 2 million and a total area of 10 ,600sq.km.Of this area about one fifth of the surface is covered by water, mainly by the River Gambia. The Country is a narrow flat strip of land stretching about 450 km inland from the Atlantic Ocean and extending on either side of the river. The maximum width is about 50km near the coast reducing to about 30 km in the East.

The Gambia's exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) extends 200 nautical miles (about 360km) to the West but is only 30 nautical miles wide (about 50km) in North/South. The Gambia lies within the Sahel Region. There is a sub-tropical climate with distinct dry and rainy seasons. The dry season is from November to May with average temperature of 21-27C and the harmattan wind keeping the humidity low. The rainy season is from June to October with high humidity and temperature around 26-32C
